Pushing Later Style Bumpers Closer to Body

1981.2000. Is it possible, since the bumpers are on shocks, to somehow push the bumpers closer to the body? Can you remove the shock and slide it closer?

My rear bumper was pushed in. I wrapped a 250 lb climbing rope around it and my tractor to pop it out. I like the look better personally as pushed in there's alot going on with too much shadow hiding the lines of the car. 1,000 foot view perhaps they look better pushed in. To each their own, YMMV. IMO if you're willing to push them in and mitigate any safety they offer you may as well go bumperless. That's a huge visual improvement over the tube bumpers.

Yo Nitrate,
It's simple and looks great! Drill a 1/8 to 3/16 hole in the bumper shocks, letting the gas escape. Then, with some gentle force on both sides, push the bumper in so as to re-position it evenly close to the body. I left a small space so the rubber ends don't rub against the body. Once positioned, use the hole in the outer tube as a pilot hole to drill the inter tube again. Then run a screw to secure the fit.

Dave.

IIRC, they are oil filled, not gas. So, use a catch basin. YMWV.

Maybe the 'gas' was only O2, but I suspect it was heavier. It sprayed oil for at least 10-15 seconds, before finally just dripping. Wear safety glasses!
