Replacing fuel pump and filter

Post by rjkoop »

Never done since I've had the car. Got the ones from AR and the bushings. Wasn't quite clear how to install the bushings but I think it seems right. Here's a few pics in case someone see something wrong.

This bracket actually slid into the holder from above on the bracket with the bushings facing down from above (hard to describe!) - only the bottom screws of the bushings went through the bracket.

Fuel leak when I start car at inlet to fuel filter. What should I torque the FI clamps to? I snugged them up with a straight screwdriver until the FI hose compressed a bit. Maybe not enough or too much?

You can crank them pretty tight. I need to tighten the one at the CSI a lot to keep it from leaking.

Cranked everything a bit tighter and now no leaks. Thanks.

Last thing (hahahaha!) I'm going to work on is the cold start. It will start fine but revs stay lower than I think it should be when cold. I think the AAV isn't open enough to start because if I bypass with a straight through hose it will rev up perfectly... but of course won't go down. So I'm pretty sure CSI is working fine and I remember a while ago checking the voltage at the CSI (and it does start well) and AAV and voltage is getting there correctly.

The pump looks loose in the brackets. I'm pretty sure the upper and lower brackets' ears are supposed to touch each other.
I don't have an FI car any more, but it just looks like it is not assembled right.

YES! The rubber goes between the brackets and the underside of the car, to absorb shock. The two brackets touch each other and hold the pump into position, with the thin rubber sheet wrapped around the pump. Eagle Eye Csaba!

Take out the AAV, which is very easy, (unless you are like me and drop a screw, etc down into the front of the engine, where of course it lodges between the timing belt and the aux shaft pulley  ) Put the AAV in the freezer and take a look through it after about 15 minutes. It should show a roughly equilateral triangle opening. Then you can heat it with a hair dryer and make sure it closes. It closes pretty quickly, the electrical connections only induce a little added heat to inner coils.

I cleaned mine by spraying a lot of carb cleaner, then WD40 into it and moving the gate back an forth with a small screwdriver, but be careful as the gate is quite delicate and is easily broken! The gate can be adjusted by loosening the tiny nut on the side, moving the gate and retightening, but it is not advised to do this except as a last resort before spending a lot of money  on a new one.

Here is a posting I did awhile ago regarding the behavior of the AAV, with some pictures, that may be of help:

I think I understand. I'll fix that tonight.
