Oil pan removal.

Post by Texsardo »

I have tried to follow a couple of leads on removing oil pan with engine still in. Not getting very far. I took off the head, camshaft banks and are having those cleaned and spacing for shims checked. Originally I was going to do complete over haul but my mechanic and I both think it had been rebuilt within last 5-6 years. He said everything with valves and springs were excellent. So trying to remove oil pan without removing engine. Read one thread about removing nuts for engine mount and transmission cross piece and jacking up engine and tranny. Where do I lift it all. What point. I do not want to do damage. No I am no longer taking engine out as medical problems and fact I am in a garage without a lift, etc. So just need to get ideas on what to do. Again, if I must remove engine then it will be cost prohibitive to have it towed to a garage.
Any help doing this with it in will be helpful. Reason for replacing gasket is PO used a cork gasket and it was cracked and leaking oil.
Thanks Texsardo

I've jacked at the bell housing.
Undo motor mount nuts
disconnect the exhaust pipe at the manifold. Undo the bolt at the exhaust pipe to tranny support.
Undo the pan bolts and then drop the pan as low as it goes.
The oil pump pick up is usually under a baffle so by brail using a 13mm wrench, undo the two bolts holding the oil pump and pick up in place.
Good luck eh...

Thanks, that's what I needed to know before breaking something. I will post with results.

All I did on my '77 was remove the engine mounts and jacket up at the bell housing. A bit of a PITA getting it off and new one on but all good.

Thanks, this afternoon is the appointed day. I had to promise wife I would not do it unless she was here. Like if something gives, I probably won't get her to help as she will be running around screaming at me while I slowly suffocate. But, bless her heart. If it keeps her happy then who cares.

Now that is funny. My wife is the same way. Does not want me under the car unless someone is home. It's funny because non of them would be able to help in a timely manner if it all went bad.

Yes, being Italian, she is in charge. And yes I can just picture her running around trying to lift the car and yelling at me for letting it fall. And all the time I am yelling "Call 911".
