Veneering Wood Dash Parts
Anyone veneered the wood and wood-like parts of the dash? If so, what type of veneer and glue? Any problems? Pics?

I was under the impression contact cement is not to be used on raw veneer.124JOE wrote:use contact cement

Re: Veneering Wood Dash Parts
I should have been more specific in that I was looking for someone that has used veneer on an 83-85. I am concerned about gendering the metal center sections. Specifically, the top center seems to bend easily.

I wood veneered/Formica laminated metal doors for a living and we used flame retardant HyBond or regular old fashioned flammable HyBond contact cement. It has to be warm and dry to prevent condensation and you need to be cautious about sweating on the material as any water/moisture or water based cements/glues on metal can blacken or rose tinge the veneer as the metal rusts and corrodes from behind. We used a good automotive primer on the metal allowing it to dry overnight before applying the contact cement and a paper backed door veneer which is about 1/8 of an inch thick when veneering metal. Wipe down the metal with pure alcohol before applying the primer to ensure good adhesion.davery wrote:I should have been more specific in that I was looking for someone that has used veneer on an 83-85. I am thinking of rearranging the center dash, so I may just make a new metal face. Good idea about painting prior to veneering. I have been doing research of using white wood glue and letting it dry, then ironing the veneer on the dried glue to attach. I am concerned about using a glue that bleeds through a raw veneer and this seems to be the best option.

Yes you do have to be careful with some of the paper thin veneers especially those that have a lot of tannic acid in them as they can discolor when a water or milk based glue is used or a contact cement containing a red or really any heavy dye is used.
