We made MSN front page

Post by 70spider »

We got some respect from the folks at MSN, making the list for 10 cool classic cars on a budget.

Yeah, that was fun until I read, "Yeah, you could buy a new 124 Spider, but spending your money on a classic is more of an adventure. Besides, the old 124s have far more style and class than the newer versions. An added bonus: You''ll have something to work on every Saturday for the rest of their life."

I love my Spider, but that last sentence rang a little too close to home....

It may be a bit of a sly jab at us, but truth be said due to the PO's lack of proper maintenance and inspired wiring my Spider has been a bit of a struggle keeping it running. Once sorted out I feel it will be just as reliable as any other classic.

That's a gross exaggeration. There have been many Saturdays when I've been waiting for parts and not working on the car at all!

A well sorted out spider is quite reliable. You guys may be wrenching on a saturday. I'm out behind the wheel finding a nice country road to devour. 8)

I think there is one thing you are missing in that analysis. A well sorted Spider implies a competent mechanic.

Sadly, my Spider lacks that critical component!

" You''ll have something to work on every Saturday for the rest of their life."

I also got a laugh out of this statement! It had to be written by a present or previous owner.

Let's face it. We are Gearheads. If we wanted a car just to drive, it would NOT be a Spider. Yes, while some of the issues can be frustrating, I like many of you, find satisfaction from figuring out the problem and fixing it.

I feel the sentence is somewhat of a compliment to us who have an 'enriched' hobby.

With my Spider, "Pesto", my family rallies around him. My daughter in particular loves the little guy, in fact when he is not running she is my biggest cheerleader to get him on the road again. After school when the weather weather is nice she always asks if we can go on a Pesto ride. She has helped me with the suspension and carb adjustments, this is priceless so I to think the issues bring a greater satisfaction when you are on the road. I wouldn't trade my Spider for anything.

My 12 year old said just the other day "Dad, do you remember when we always had somethig to do on the Spider, I miss those days." Current Spider is now well sorted and has been for about 3 years. Projects on the car are far less frequent outside of basic maintenance. Seriously, car is a joy and is much more dependable. Kinda miss some of the weekend wrenching.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!
