Complete Exhaust

I have a stock 1978 spider and want to replace the exhaust system. I like the headers from allisonsautomotive and I'm not sure about the est. There is a package available. It is not a hot rood but just a daily driver but I'd like some nice sound. Do you think going the header route for a cost in the neighborhood of 1600.00 is overkill. I wouldn't mind a little more power but don't want a dual carb setup.
I am just thinking out loud about the question if this is too much for a daily driver. What do you think. I guess the bottom line is I don't mind spending the money, I don't want to do something stupid.
There is a crack in my manifold and I'd like to get an exhaust that makes sense. I've been known to go overboard for no apparent reason and I'd like some advise so I don't make a mistake.
I love this sight for all of the opinions and I couldn't have gotten my car to where it is with out all of the useful posts, successes and failures alike.

i have a headder and a stock center and a ansa muffler it sounds good and poeple tell me so

This is just my opinion, but for the money you may be better off looking for a 4-2 manifold, stock center, then a free flowing muffler ANSA, etc.

Spend your money on upgrading the 32ADFA, if that's what you have and making sure the suspension is in good working order.

Thanks, I did the carb and put an entire front end under it last fall. Except for the steering box which is working fine. I'll look into an exhaust manifold versus a header. I also replaced the radiator with an aluminum one from allisons so it does run and drives OK but I'm just not real happy with the exhaust.
OK, I've looked around and read a bunch of posts and have a muffler in mind. A FA2567 Ansa muffler. What do you think? I did see a 4-2-1 manifold for around 300.00.

I did buy a weber carb a few years back. I guess I'm not really sure what I have. If it is not the 34, I'll surely look into that upgrade also. I believe I used the thrott34ADFle linkage part form my original carb.

I think the carb I purchased a few years ago was a EMPI 32/36 DFEV Carburetor from Allisonautomotive.

From reading the previous post, I could also do a lot better on the intake end?

If you have a 4-1 exhaust manifold then switching to a 4-2-1 will give better performance and oddly enough a much nicer exhaust note. With an otherwise stock motor I doubt headers will do much for you other than eye candy. I have the Autoricambi exhaust system on my spider with an early 4-2-1 manifold/down pipe on my 2L and I'm very happy with it (larger diameter pipes than stock).

near the idler

Thanks guys, It looks like I will be looking for a used manifold.

Looks like a manifold will be almost as much as allisons headers so it might be headers for me. I just don't like the price of the exhaust behind them.

I used header wrap on my headers and it caused then to crack. Hopefully you are wrapping the idler and not the header.. Just FYI..

I found a good used 4-2-1 on Ebay for $35 last year. I think that's more of an average price for these. Maybe wait a bit.

thanks rob no i have the headder wrapped from the mount to the end where it couples to the mid section
i havent had any cracking problems.if i did id probably weld it up

You might want to reconsider that... My headers basically were starting to rot where it was getting super hot under the wrapping on top of the cracking problems... We had a big discussion about it.. Here's the post..

usually once the metal cracks from excessive heat, the metal is crystallized and ruined preventing any long-lasting repair
