Cam Box Operating Temp? Crinkle Paint Ok?

Post by RRoller123 »

Anyone know the operating temperature of the Cam Boxes? (particularly the exhaust of course, which is much hotter).

The reason is, I am wondering if we can use crinkle paint on the boxes, which is good to 350F.

Thanks,

If your cambox gets to 350F, you've cooked everything else.

yup
you either didn't de-grease properly before paint, or the paint is not what it's advertised to be.

Excellent! That's what I suspected, but down near the exhaust cam box junction with the head it could get pretty hot. (Intake cam box obviously stays much cooler). So an operating temp of 350F seems like it will provide a reasonably good margin. I like the red "Ferrari" wrinkle look and will use it on both of the cam boxes. I have already used it on the valve covers with great results, but they stay much cooler of course...

FYI for those painting various engine components:

I did find that on the exhaust shield (not the exhaust itself, but the ~triangular shield mounted on 3 studs) that the "high temp" paints failed miserably. Bubbled up. This piece gets very hot. Got some 600F exhaust paint in aluminum from Eastwood and will be redoing that one. No way that shield is reaching 600F, especially with the insulation layer on the backside, and being isolation mounted on three standoffs.

I painted my exhaust manifold with paint made for wood stoves. I think it burned off.

There is a good Eastwood product for the exhaust manifolds themselves:

This is the 600F exhaust paint, in aluminum color:

The manifold coating works wonders visually, and I'm hoping the finish lasts!

Temps are not excessive. I can say for sure that crinkle powder coating will work. So will regular powder coating, which I used in silver color on the thermostat housing, cam boxes, etc.

No. It hasn't oxidized much since rebuild. Good luck with your project.

I used pot belly stove black on my exhaust manifold. It did burn in, but the end result is still far better than the original.
