I used a 6" length of aircraft brake cable in an electric drill to open the air tubes and the ports in the head. It's clear that the cable (.0675) is a good start, but way too small, especially for the head.
I can soak the tube assembly in the 1 gallon Chem dip, and that might work, but I can't soak the head, so I need to know the most effective way to clean the ports. It would also be nice to know how deep the holes are.
Please help,
Stranded in an aircraft hangar.
Clearing air injection.
Re: Clearing air injection.
Why do you feel the air injection tubes need to be cleaned, this is the first time I have heard of someone doing this in the thirty some years I have been messing with Fiats.

Re: Clearing air injection - Won't pass CA smog
Right - won't pass CA emissions.
It's a gross polluter after the last test.
According to SoCalMark:
EGR is not essential (mine is working)
Set timing 3 degrees retarded of nominal (CA limit is +- 3deg)
Get the air injection working - he says it's essential
Re-jet the carb to lean - he has a gas analyzer, so easy for him to say. I'll post another thread when I get to this.
Make sure the Catalytic Converter is working.
Make sure the vacuum system is correctly connected, and all hoses are in good condition.
Recently, I used a set of drill bits to run through the tubes, opening them up to wherever I stopped - i think it's 3/16", but the bend in the tubes is probably still restricted. The main body of the tube system is full of junk - about 1mm thick everywhere.
The ports in the head were totally clogged. I'll run the drill bit down through those too when I can find my flex drive for the drill motor.
ChemDip is not doing much if anything yet.
I'm thinking that a .177 cal bronze bore brush from a Hoppes gun cleaning kit might help a bit.

Re: Clearing air injection.
Joe,
That's a stellar idea! I'll try soldering or JBwelding a spring onto the cable and see if it will spin on in so I can yank it out. The tubes do appear to be blocked up into the curved section, and the ChemDip is not dissolving it. AFIK, it never does, simply loosens carbon enough that a layer can be taken off...then dip again.

Re: Clearing air injection.
You might consider looking for another one in the parts wanted section. Many of us throw those things away in states that don't have emissions. I don't have one but I bet many folks do.
