I have so many questions that come up while taking on this head swap. Thanks for your help.
Couple of current questions:
4-2-1, 80 FI 2L
I am pulling the head and have the exhaust manifold nuts (along with 4 studs) removed.
Is it necessary to fully remove the manifold from the 6-bolt downspout, or is there usually enough slop to fit a new head and exhaust gaskets, etc. in with the 4-2-1 manifold in place? (I was amazed at how easily the exhaust studs and nuts came off with a little penetrating oil.)
But 4 of the 5 studs came out with the nuts, only the front stud stayed in place and just the nut came off.

Re: Removing Exhaust Manifold And Head Question
have you ever double nuted a stud before?
put a nut on but deep enuff to put on a second one then tighten them together
but not down to the manifold
then try to loosen the stud
hope this helps.joe
then you can leave the manifold alone

Re: Removing Exhaust Manifold And Head Question
I pulled my head a couple of times leaving the exhaust manifold in place. There was a fair range of motion that let the manifold get pulled back from the head.

Re: Removing Exhaust Manifold And Head Question
Excellent, thanks for the help! I will pull that last stud and leave the manifold in place. The nuts and studs at the head came off easily, but the 6-bolt junction at the downpipe looks a lot more corroded in place. Not going to touch it unless I have absolutely have to.
