state of cooling system means that head gasket is also eaten away. so you need to pull the head, get a new gasket and properly clan the system. basically, i'd pull the engine and unscrew every nut and bolt in it.

Head is off - now I'm really alarmed. Thoughts?
I'll post closeups of #4 when I can get Flickr to cooperate. Basically 2 large valve shaped gouges on the piston. That explains the intake leak.

Re: 1971 Spider (BS1) Project Launch
the valves look ok put the plug back in and put some oil in the head to see if it drains out
also lower the piston and do the same but watch to see of the oil leaks thru the cracks in the piston
it looks like someone had a valve fall out and wrecked the piston.then just put it back together with a good head

Re: 1971 Spider (BS1) Project Launch
It looks like the engine is coming out regardless, so I have some decisions to make.
Options:
Rebuild the 1400 with some upgrades (hi comp Pistons, etc), either with the 1800 head I just pulled off, or an original 1400 head I have.
Install one of the two 2 liter motors I have (one FI, one carb model) - no transmission though, so I think I'd either have to get one or figure out how to mate it to the 1400 transmission.
Put in the 1800 motor and trans from my other car.
Any combination of above.
I welcome suggestions - tips
