Hey All -
I've run into a new problem with my wife's 1977 Fiat Spider. I am looking for some help from the guru's here!
This is a standard 1977 Fiat (no EFI). The engine will start with a couple cranks (normal). It will idle for anywhere from 10-30s, sputter and die. It will generally start right up again - rinse and repeat. Prior to this persistent problem, the car had a sporadic issue - when driving (especially after getting warmed up), when approaching a stop sign, you push the clutch in and downshift, the engine would immediately shut down. It would immediately start up. I am thinking this might something to do with the idle settings....?
The gas tank is 3/4's - and was filled recently with premium fuel. The fuel filter in the engine bay has been replaced.
Suggestions on troubleshooting?
Suggestions on possible part failures?
Thanks!
T-

When it dies, does the tachometer first drop to zero? If so then the ignition system is quitting. However, it sounds like it could be fuel related.
I would also check that the idle solenoid is working, and screwed securely into the carburetor.

sounds like the idle circuit is plugged up, or as Csaba suggests a loose or non-working idle stop solenoid

When I spoke to my "local" Fiat mechanic, he thought it might be the idle solenoid too. (Unfortunately, I can't even get the car out of the driveway and he's about 45miles away).
So....
Can you share a pic of the idle solenoid so I know what I am looking for?
Happen to have a part number for it....?
Thanks!

Basically if there's no power to the green wire, there should be no idle or a very rough idle, always wanting to die. You'd have to always strategically ride the clutch and the gas pedal in order to drive the vehicle. The solenoid cylinder can be unscrewed from the side of the carb and inspected for any blocages.
