was rebuilt about 5000 Miles ago. It had a tapping noise since then that was not present before. It has gotten louder now from the front of the engine. I checked the valve clearances again and they are all within specs with a slight tendency to the tighter end (.396). I replaced the head gasket recently and had the head checked at a machine shop with no findings. No bend valve or anything. I checked for exhaust leaks but nothing there. Any suggestions on what else could be it? The engine runs fine. It just sounds like it will explode in higher rpm's. No overheating and the oil looks good (Rotella 15-40). I cranked the engine by hand a few times but there was no unusual hesitation or noise.Noisy engine

check if cam gears are properly tightened

Make sure the aux shaft is timed properly. If not the lobe on the back side of the shaft can contact the #2 connecting rod.

If the crankshaft thrust washers were installed backwards, they will wear down the crank. This will result in tapping noises and you can observe the crank pulley moving fore and aft when the car is running.
Yank on the pulley (car not running) and check for movement.

So, I took the belt off as suggested and the noise is no more. The crankshaft pulley has no play and the water pump feels solid too. My aux pulley does not have a hole but a white mark that's at one o'clock . The crankshaft pulley has also a white mark that almost lines up with the aux pulley mark. What next?

With the belt off I can now see a hole on the aux pulley. Exactly opposite from the white mark

I am quite certain now it is the water pump. Listening with a stethoscope points to it. I ordered one and on Tuesday we will see. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
