R&T Article -- 1970

Post by focodave »

Forgive me if this has already been posted in the past.
In addition to my '80 FIAT Spider, I also own a 1970 MGB GT and when I was on the MG Experience forum I saw this R&T article of interest for all of us FIAT owners:

I knew that I chose wisely when I picked the fiat over the Porsche and the MG! Hah!

Wonder how the X19 introduced 2 year later did against the 914.

It's funny how the Porsche came in second, but was also the second worst. I have both a 914 and a 124 and the Fiat is definitely smoother and more comfortable, but the 914 is more fun overall, if you don't mind a compressed spine afterwards.

I haven't driven any of the other contenders, but it's always nice to see that the 124 was enjoyed from the beginning all the way until today
1979 Spider 2000 (gone)
1984 Pininfarina Azzurra (for sale)
1982 Spider 2000 (here to stay)

I've driven both cars and had a 914 on the track with the PCA.

The beauty of the 914 is all the aftermarket parts that can be put onto it that have literally decades of race-proven tech, plus the integrated roll bar. People have traded stuff for years and years. Throw some fender flares on a 914 and you can really upsize the tires and brakes, if need be. Plus, if I recall correctly, the engine mounts allow for a 911 flat-six to be dropped right in (air cooled, not the new jobbies). Those are perhaps some of the most race-prepped engines ever for amateurs--with a real racing history--and you can get amazing power output and even reliability from their 2.7L.

The 914 was chronically underpowered with the VW plant but that was easily addressed.

I'm glad to see the Spider consistently coming out on top in contemporary reviews. There's no comparison for the Italian flair, nor the 2+2 seating and ample space in the Spider.

I feel disloyal to post a pic of the 914 so here's an Abarth to balance things out. :)
