79 oil through breather

Post by juvius »

I picked this car up with the understanding the the mechanical fuel pump went bad. It's not the case at all. Unplug the fuel line from the carb, cranked it and the fuel was flowing fine. So fuel was getting to the carb but not going through. Played around for a while and got it going. A couple seconds after running, oil started flowing out of the breather hose like water out of a garden hose. Anyways, pulled out the dipstick and found that there was way too much oil (see pic below). Other than the obvious (too much oil), is there anything else that causes oil to come out of the breather hose?

The breather may be plugged. May be worth removing it to check. You may have to buy new breather hoses if the old ones are hard.

Thanks..... I dumped all that oil out and put the right amount back in... it's not doing it anymore. Now I just got to get it running right. It stalls when I take my foot off the gas

one qt overfill will cause oil to be pumped up through the breather hose. The other potential cause is blowby causing excessive pressure in the crankcase

Check to see if the idle solenoid is working. You should hear it click when one applies 12V to it.

The 1979 carburator and intake manifold are both horrible. The common upgrade is the 1800 manifold and a larger carburetor. Unless you have to comply with emissions, that is.

i'll check that solenoid when I get home this evening. I'm going to get the single plane intake and another 32/36 dfev here pretty quickly. also replacing the head with a fuel injected 2ltr head. after I get rid of all that nasty emissions garbage...
