Re: Rebuild or engine swap?
Cost will depend a lot on what you can fnd close to you. Used engines are not very expensive, but pretty much with any option you will need to refresh or rebuild the engine.

Someone with more knowledge on the engines and the hood bump outs might want to chime in if that may be an issue. I was under the assumption the hood bump outs were for the 1800 and 2000 engines. The early cars, like yours has none.

If you're swapping power plants then changing the motor mounts to be lower is a sensible approach. I think Csaba has done that...

Re: Rebuild or engine swap?
years ago, I swapped a 1438 with a 79 2L carb. I pulled the original carb and installed a 71 carb and rejetted. Where I had to shift down 2 gears to pull some hills, I now didn't have to shift at all. I actually got better MPG as my foot wasn't glued to the floor all the time. Best change I ever made.
Re: Rebuild or engine swap?
Thanks again for all the replys.
I'm going to source an 1800 engine locally and probably rebuild it unless its coming from a running car with good compression.
As 80spiddy mentioned do I need a hood bump for the 1800 engine? or will the lower motor mounts work?
Cheers!
