Not sure where I am going wrong here.
I removed the distributor and replaced the inner seal. That part is done.
Prior to removing, I lined up the existing timing marks on pulleys as shown in picture, pointed the rotor to #1 point and also made mark on valve cover as shown in second picture. I also put cylinder #1 at TDC. Any micro-adjustments made to line up the pulley marks were done by pushing the car in 4th gear - no cranking of engine.

I replaced the distributor with the rotor pointed to the mark I made. All timing marks on pulleys were the same as when I removed the distributor.
The engine will now turn over, but will not start. The cranking is relatively smooth, but with an occasional backfire.
Any advice on where to go from here is much appreciated. I am a relative novice mechanic, but have replaced a head gasket before so have some familiarity.

With the crank shaft pulley on the zero degree mark and the cam pulleys line up with their marks, the dizzy should be set so that the rotor is pointing to the #4 contact button on the dizzy cap. Even with that set you will be off a bit and will have to move the dizzy a bit after each start attempt....usually in a counter clockwise direction.

I am unsure about this: "With the crank shaft pulley on the zero degree mark..." On the crank shaft pulley, I have one indented mark the size of a ball bearing. Is this the reference mark , and should it be at the top of the pulley?
Also, I thought that as long as the #1 cylinder was at the top of the compression stroke, and the top pulleys were at their marks, then that is verification of TDC. Do I still need a crank pulley mark?
