Can a High Compression FI 2L Pass CA Smog?
I'm thinking of looking for a fuel injected 81 Spider and possibly selling my 75 Spider. I have a 2L block with Euro spec pistons, so 9.8:1 cr, that I would like to swap in if I did make such a purchase. My question is: does anyone have experience with a high compression. 2L with the stock L-jetronic fuel injection passing smog in California?

no problem if the engine is tuned correctly and the catalyst is working

Okay, that is what I figured. Changing the compression ratio shouldn't change the volume of air, and therefore fuel, consumed by much.
I bought the 75 even though it needed work because I was trying to avoid smog. But it now it seems cheaper to buy and enjoy a more complete FI car, despite the smog requirement.
Had any luck putting a slightly improved intake cam in? From my reading it seems you can't really tweak the control system much. So maybe it's best just to leave the cams alone?

we use mild cams in the FI engine with good results. The increased compression can raise Nox levels, so that's a consideration for smog testing

Ask your local Volkswagen agent, they know how to pass
