manifold plugs

Post by zachmac »

Trying to set up a single plain manifold for a modern carb and I don't need any port except one vacuum line. Was told all the various sensor / vacuum tap / water holes are metric pipe thread? Can I use some equivalent NPT as plugs? If not, where the heck do I get metric pipoe thread plugs? I'd rather not run useless unwired sensors in those holes.

I appreciate the link.

Does anyone know the specific sizes of the various ports. Particularly the larger sensor port on the bottom and the large one in the center of the top? I tried some metric drain plugs at the auto parts store and none seemed to really fit. I suspect most drain plugs are not pipe thread and I think the manifold ports are? I hate to just order a bunch of stuff hoping something will work, especially to find out they don't.

I have some of the old sensors but no metric thread gauge. How do I determine what I need?

I purchased a linear caliper from Harbor Fright for about $12 that displays either inch or metric. Very handy tool to have.

I think these are the size/ part number plugs you need

DP10X1.0T - Metric drain plug (DP10X1.0T)
DP16X1.5T - Metric drain plug (DP16X1.5T)
DP18X1.5T - Metric drain plug (DP18X1.5T)

Say what???

From Maryland Metrics web site:

"MARYLAND METRICS - The One-Stop Source For Metric And British Sized Fasteners, Wrenches, Cutting, & Measuring Tools, Metal Shapes, Oil Seals, O-Rings, Mechanical Power Transmission Equipment, Bearings, Hydraulic And Pneumatic Fittings & Tubing, Workholding Components, Plumbing Fittings, & Some Electrical & Electronic Components

SOME HELPFUL NOTES ABOUT THREADS;
1. THE METRIC THREAD DESIGNATION USES PITCH IN PLACE OF THE MORE FAMILIAR U.S.A. METHOD OF THREADS PER INCH. PITCH IS THE DISTANCE IN mm FROM ANY ONE POINT ON A THREAD TO A CORRESPONDING POINT ON THE NEXT THREAD, WHEN MEASURED PARALLEL TO ITS AXIS.
2. METRIC COARSE THREAD DOES NOT HAVE TO HAVE PITCH SPECIFIED. THE ABSENCE OF THE PITCH SPECIFICATION INDICATES THAT THE THREAD WILL BE FROM THE COARSE THREAD SERIES.

3. THE NOMINAL DIAMETER OF METRIC PIPE THREADS, BOTH TAPERED AND PARALLEL IS THE SAME AS THE MAJOR DIAMETER (OD) OF THE THREAD. HOWEVER, THE U.S.A., BRITISH AND JAPANESE NOMINAL PIPE THREAD DIAMETERS CORRESPOND TO THE APPROXIMATE INSIDE DIAMETER (ID) OF THE PIPE OR TUBE. IN SECTION (A), ALL THE THREADS ARE LISTED IN ASCENDING MAJOR DIAMETER SIZE ORDER. THIS PLACES THE U.S.A., BRITISH AND JAPANESE PIPE THREADS AMONG THREAD DIAMETERS WHICH ARE LARGER THAN THEIR NOMINAL SIZE."

interesting, Bruce. I thought pipe treads were tapered by definition.

Holy *&^%,
Is that the manifold I sent you? If I send you my whole car will you make it look that nice as Quick? :D :D :D

I think Auto Ricambi sells a kit for that.

Yep, that's the one! I sent you a private email as well. A night soaking in the parts cleaner followed up with a session in the bead blast cabinet can work wonders!

I know AR sells manifolds (when they have them) with the holes plugged but didn't see the plugs themselves offered. Gonna order from the linked site today. Looks like I need:
1 10 x 1.0T
2 16 x 1.5T
1 18 x 1.5T
and the big one is a 22 x 1.5T!

I think you're right, Russ. In fact, now that I've done a bit more research, I think Mark is right as well. It seems that while there are metric thread standards, there are no metric (tapered) pipe threads.

Sorry to question you, Mark!

They may not call them pipe threads but there absolutely ARE tapered metric threads. Look at the first site linked above. LOTS of tapered metric plugs available and all of the sensors are clearly tapered so a tapered plug (pipe thread by any other name) is what is needed to plug them.

1 ea. DP18X1.5TSS - Stainless Tapered Metric Drain Plug $7.06

Yup, that plus a 10 to plug the coolant nipple hole for the choke hose. Ordered yesterday.
