auxilliary camshaft alignment

Post by kenmataya »

greetings!

I'm about to replace my timing belt on my 72 spider. last time i did this, i created a template based on the diagram in my Haynes manual. I aligned the hole on the pulley to the template - about 1:30. got it all together, started it up and had a slight tapping noise. i readjusted and everything was kosher. The problem is, I can't quite remember which way i adjusted it..... so, if i want to play it safe, should I err clockwise, or counterclockwise?

Thanks,
Ken

The timing mark points at the 13mm bolt that the tensioner spring is wrapped around. Check that you have the correct pulley for the auxiliary shaft.

well, that is interesting.... it looks like the alignment hole might still line up with the alignment pin, if so, then it shouldn't make any difference?

THanks,

This is what is set my auxiliary camshaft to. Runs great and oil pressure is strong.

The issue is the relationship of the alignment notch (or hole) to the aux shaft keyway. On the intake pulley, the shaft key is to the right of the alignment hole. On the aux shaft pulley, the shaft ket is to the left of the alignment notch. The difference between the two looks like 10-15 degrees? That would be enough to cause problems.

there is a lot of slop in the aux shaft timing. you have crankshaft clearance from 12:30 to 2:30 timing for the aux shaft.

OK! took some pictures and did a quick layout. the timing marks are each 14 degress off the alignment pins. 28 degree total offset between the marks. so the exhaust timing mark location is shown as the red dot. about 2:00 so within the 12:30-2:30 arc. nothing is hitting when i manually crank the motor, but i think i'll back it off a couple of teeth counter clockwise. nice thing about the intake pulley being on there - easy to adjust the aux, shaft.
