Twin Cam Valve Adjustment tool

Post by abarth4 »

What tool are you using to depress the cam follower when adjusting the valves on a Fiat twin cam? I pulled one out of my tool box that I bought from a vendor long ago (but had not used) and it's not even close to fitting. It's a dual blade version with a stubby end but is useless. Can anyone give me a vendor and/or part number? I need one to carry on with my engine rebuild. Thanks

Valve adjustment can actually be done without the tool, take a look at these instructions.

I bought the tool from Vick Auto Sports. $39.90. Had to adjust (bend) the tool to have an internal clearance at the fork ends of about 33.5 mm. Now works well. Very solid and appears stainless. ONe would think it would come perfect - but not at least for my car - I think they are all the same but I have a 1970.

I also use a bent arm tool that I have had about 40 years that says Fiat on it. It seems to be pretty much the one now on Ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fiat-Dino-2000- ... e2&vxp=mtr
Not really sure what it is called but does great. probably could bend a screwdriver?

The original FIAT tool has a long arm, fits the sides of all of the shim buckets, and has a little sliding indicator for how far to turn the cam to get the shim out. That other screwdriver thing is for removing the shim, but it is much easier with a blast of compressed air (I usually cover it with a towel to avoid the mist of oil). None of the reproduction tools ever fit very well, I don't know why they didn't just reproduce the original tool. Perhaps I'll retire on selling repros of the FIAT tool..

You can adjust the valves with out the tool you know!

How by using simple card board.

An old Italian mechanic showed me this trick

This link doesn't work, at least for me.

Hi Nick, working with the head off the engine you put cardboard between valve & seat just like was shown in the old topic using the zap tie trick

I use the Fiat X1/9 tool to hold the bucket down, it grabs the bucket on only one side and makes acess to the shim easier. I use the spoon tool to push the bucket down. Never had much luck with the forked 124 tool.
