Anyone Done An Electric Trunk Release?

Post by RRoller123 »

Has anyone done an electric trunk release? thinking this would be a good Winter project. If so, could you post some pics, or list the release system that you used and what worked? Thanks!

I've done a few. The tricky part is the latch lever isn't very long so the mounting angle of the solenoid is important to get enough leverage for release

Yup I'm doing this but I'm just going to go to pick n pull and get one off of another car for a couple bucks.. And fabricate what I need.. I'm also going to use struts so that the trunk will open up when released.

Cheers!

I have an 85 with an trunk release that has never worked. I have not spent a lot of time on it, but have never been able to get it working.

I added a trunk popper to my car and it works great. I bought the kit (part # TK01-K) from A1 Electric http://www.a1electric.com for $30.90 which includes shipping. Installation was a breeze. I wired it to a push-button switch that I mounted on the driver's side of the glove box.

Excellent! That is what I am looking for. And it keeps the key actuated release intact?

I think the factory electric trunk uses a relay circuit that prevents the trunk from being opened when the ignition key is in the "run or start" positions. This way the trunk can not be accidentally opened while driving.

I couldn't make the popper work with the factory key and connecting arm but I believe it is possible to do this with some fiddling. I didn't bother with using a relay because if the trunk pops open when driving (that hasn't happened to me) then I'd just pull over and close it.

This is the same setup I am using....works great!! I ran the emergency release to the rear of the right quarter panel.
