Rebuilt transmission noisy 3rd
Hi,
I just installed a 5spd that I rebuilt myself.
The transmission is much quieter now but 3rd gear is whining on acceleration and makes a horrible noise on deceleration. Best way I can describe the deceleration noise like a semi truck engine braking.
The noise from 3rd seemed to get worse the more I drove, or maybe I am just noticing it more.
Any ideas what would cause this?

Yeah, that was my thought but what would make them go south so quickly? Hasn't even been 10 miles.
There is an occasional rattle sounding noise only on deceleration.

No Chinese that I am aware of just a mix of Soviet, East German and SKF.
I'll pull the cover tonight and see if there is anything fishy looking.

soviet - ok if markings are etched in shell of the bearing, if printed - bad copy
east german - ok
SKF ok if from ols stock. dunno about what you get in US, but in europe, since they moved production to Bulgaria in mid 90's, quality has gone south

Re: Rebuilt transmission noisy 3rd -- with pics
So I pulled the cover and its like glitter. I've only driven 15miles!
I looked around at whats going on inside. The gears are new but the layshaft is original, not sure if that will cause some shavings to show up?
Overall it looks clean but the front layshaft bearing looks butted up against 4th, see pictures below. Is that normal?
I am using a 1438 bellhousing and its a late model 5speed which has a larger front layshaft bearing, would that cause an issue?
I don't feel any play in the layshaft and it turns freely, the output shaft has a very small amount of up down play. I torqued the nut on the output shaft to 108 ftlbs, which is what the Fiat manual called for not sure what else could be going on here, any ideas?

The glitter is not yellow from what I can see and looks grey like aluminum. If its not magnetic then I won't be from a steel shaft or bearing so look for a worn spot on the case. Sure a snap ring didn't slip or a thrust washer/collar didn't get misplaced?

Re: Rebuilt transmission noisy 3rd
check if it's steel or aluminium shavings. that will give you an idea where to begin
and it's the upper shaft where problems come from, not lower, so these pics are no use unfortunately

Do you have the belleville washer between the transmission input shaft and the bell housing? If so, is it facing the right direction?

Re: Rebuilt transmission noisy 3rd
I have the washer between the input shaft bearing and bellhousing I did not change its position from how it was on the 4spd transmission.
Most of the shavings are magnetic so something ferrous!
I was reading on turbo124 that 3rd gear is either 31 or 33 degrees, I replaced 3rd with a Lada part so that might be the issue here?
The whole thing spun by hand and went into gear without any issues, need to pull the trans and pull it apart, sigh.

Lada fiat gears are not interchangeable.

Re: Rebuilt transmission noisy 3rd
Check if transmission ratio of 3rd gear on 4sp and 5sp box is the same. If it is, you can use parts from 4sp

Re: Rebuilt transmission noisy 3rd
I don't know if it is normal for the lower layshaft bearing to be that far back. You may have forgotten to put the snapring on the front of the bearing and then the shaft slid farther back than it should? Maybe.
Possibly someone can snap a pic if they have a trans out of a car?
