Hat Wather. And it seems my seat belts pass police muster...

Post by phaetn »

It's that time of year: Hat weather.
https://youtu.be/8eSZwKldB7k

I figure there's only a week or two left -- at the very most -- of the 2015 driving season. If they salt the roads in the next few days then that spells the end.

Two days ago it was just above freezing at around noon when I was driving the Spider on an errand downtown. There was an unmarked cop car parked at an angle with its lights flashing as a pair of officers were directing traffic around some rushed construction that required tearing up the road. It was a really wide four lane one-way road; it was quiet and there were only a couple of cars around.

I go past the cop who was all bundled up in a fut-trapper type hat (like mine!) and then stopped for the red light that was just past him. As I'm waiting I hear his voice from behind me: "Five points belts, wow!" I wait. I've always wondered if a cop would wonder whether or not they are legal; I keep an old original and badly frayed lap belt in the trunk in case I need to show the original equipment. I figure I would argue that my setup is much safer and still uses the original mounting points...

He walks up and then admires the racing seats, too. We have a brief chat about the car and then the weather. He's clearly getting cold having to stand on the street all morning. "Wow," he says, "It's cold out. How do you drive like that?" he asks. The light changes and then he exclaims, "You've got balls, buddy!" and laughs. I smile and pull away as his female partner catches wind of the conversation and laughs too. I'm not sure if driving with the top down when it's cold qualifies as having balls (and if it does, they had probably retreated to somewhere around my chest level to get warm) but it's nice to know that my seat-belt setup has a seal of approval from Ottawa's finest. :)

I'm thinking driving till December buddy, that global warming thang...bring it on!
Although I'm old...roof up and heater on!

Passing police muster, one of the benefits of visible 5 point belts.
I have been pulled over a few times for not having a belt on. Seems kid-cops don't know that older cars had only lap belts. I usually, in my cocky manner, suggest they call their dad and ask them what their cars had for seat belts in the old days. No tickets yet.
And yes I know what some of you are thinking, in a bad accident I'm going to Asia...

Good on ya!!

I'm going to try and make it to December, too, but it will depend on when they put salt down.

Last year I made it although there was a hiccup of about about a week in November when we had an early snow, but then it became warm again and rain washed the little salt there was all away.

No heat for me because the core is bypassed; however, I discovered I could put saran wrap over the fresh air ventilator under the dash (that never closed properly) and that really prevented freezing air from coming in at my feet. It's not quite heat but at least it's the absence of cold. :)

Cheers,
Phaetn

Crunch time is about to ease up at work at the end of this week -- it feels like it's time for a beer soon!!

I had a very amusing discussion with the local police one early Saturday morning in December as I was heading towards the Flüela Pass in eastern Switzerland in my old MX-5, with the top down, gloves and wooly hat on, heater blasting. They simply couldn't comprehend that someone would be (a) out at 6am (b) in a RWD cabriolet (c) in winter (d) with the top down (e) with the sole intention of driving up and over a snow-covered alpine pass. They were sure I was intoxicated. :D

But of course you were intoxicated; with the joy of driving a convertible with the top down in brisk winter weather! Nothin like it if your heater works and you dress right.

Canadians are welcomed to winter their Fiats here in Florida. Seatbelts of all kinds are welcomed as long as you wear them. Hat season is year round due to the Florida Sunshine.

Just leave the butt floss speedo swim suits at home. Elderly Canadian men are getting quite a reputation for gracing our beaches wearing them for some reason so much so that its become a local joke. Its not a pretty sight.

Defroster sometimes is better. And the stares for those that do not understand are priceless!

I almost feel inspired to drive to work today with the top down wearing nothing but a butt-floss speedo and a hat. ;)

It's just above freezing and blowing heat is out of the question since the core is bypassed.

It's been a heck of a couple of weeks on the work front and I'm only one step away from doing it except for the fact that I would be quickly escorted out of the building once I arrived at work. (I am but mad north-north-west. When the wind is southerly, I know a hawk from a handsaw.)

Hope you have cloth or heated seats. Ooooeee!

It's the 90 year old's wearing the speedo's or bikini's that always seem to be from Canada for some reason. At that age some things are best kept a mystery. I don't know what they see in the mirror when they walk by one - possibly cataracts prevents them or maybe the mirror cracks before the can get a good look at themselves.

Better yet just send me the cars with money for gas and per-diam for meals/lodging so I can make sure they are driven regularly. :D
