I'm installing new Hastings piston rings and the directions are not super clear on which ring goes in the top groove (closest to the piston head).
Am I correct in thinking that the darker ring goes in the middle groove, and the bevel/notch in this ring should face down?

Yes, so the ring pictured is upside down. Believe me, you don't want to install that ring upside down.
