Pesto has a cold :~(

Post by 70spider »

Well I woke up yesterday and started Pesto and something didn't sound right. I brought him up to running temp and something was off about the idle, it was really low, barely maintaining 300rpm, and lumpy and seemed to be missing. Acceleration was extremely hesitant and lacking power so I checked the plugs and they seem alright, not great looking, but alright. I fiddle with the timing a bit and no change. So I did a compression test: #1=122, #2=103, #3=126, #4=115.
Any thoughts?

check to see if you have spark at each plug. Just looking at the plug isn't enough. If you are still using a dizzy type ignition, pull each plug wire and see if it changes anything.

I checked the cam timing and everthing lines up. I'll get the spark tomorrow if I have time. By the way, is there suppose to be that much variance in the compression readings? Well thanks for the replies.

Check the ignition points gap. It can drift off after having been properly set.

I recently had this issue. While the engine was running I started to disconnect plug wires:

-pulled number 1 and it quit, started up again
-pulled number 2 and it kept running with no change
-pulled number 3 and it quit, started up again
-pulled number 4 and it kept running with no change

I pulled the the plugs and they were dark, number 2 and 4 were wet with gas. It was running rich and fouling plugs to the point I was running on 2 or 3 cylinders.
I cleaned the plugs and verified spark. Once everything was buttoned back up again it ran well and the idle settled to around 900..

The compression in #2 is low - but not low enough to stop from running. Sounds like a good old ignition problem, diagnose it before you go elsewhere, including checking that the dizzy hasn't slipped.

Well I finally got some time to work on him. I took a shot and bought some plugs, even though I changed them less than 1,000 miles ago, and it did the trick. The old plugs were black with carbon, indicating a rich condition. When I got the 32/36 DFEV I change the primary idle jet to a smaller one but left the others unchanged. Should I change the others as well?
Thanks for all the suggestions.
