Did you figure out what size jets they were?

Re: Buying the Chinese ADF on evilbay - A coupla questions
Mine showed up yesterday.
* Slightly bent accelerator pump lever, no big deal at all.
* Slightly bend secondary lever caused the pin in the slot to just touch the carb housing and stick the secondary open. Bend it back and it works well.
* All screws were tight
* Water choke inlets OK
* Fuel inlets OK
* choke & throttle plates were not too tight.
I put a tiny amount of extremely light machine oil on the moving parts and it operated pretty smoothly. Hopefully the jets are OK.

Oh, there was slight visible surface rust on the choke shaft (that the choke plate screws too). Just looked dirty, not any concern at all.

Check the set screw in the lower body on the linkage side that sets the closed position for the secondary, mine vibrated loose and the secondary wouldnt' close, the idle got up to 3500 rpm by the time I got home and found it! Put some gasket sealer on the threads and it hasn't moved since.

Will do. For our application, the secondary should be closed fully when not in use, correct?

Re: Buying the Chinese ADF on evilbay - A coupla questions
a couple of years ago, a friend of mine started to import 40 IDF Chinese carbs for VWs, purchased by pallets.
he went to the factory to check overall quality before starting business, but although having tried to teach them how to control them, his final solution was to check 100% of the units before selling them to his french customers.
I wonder if the wellknown german vendor who sells it about $500 does the same on his units.
still worth buying directly from china, if you keep in mind you'll have to do this little control job, and you don't care buying copies.

Re: Buying the Chinese ADF on evilbay - A coupla questions
Mine arrived yesterday, and there are some issues.
When I opened the box the plastic bottom shipping protector was just tossed in on top of the packaging, hmmmmmm...
Strong smell of gas from the box even through all the layers of bubble wrap.
Finally peel all the packing off and yes the cam follower arm is bent but everything else is relatively undamaged by shipping.
The nut on the primary shaft is crossthreaded, badly.
Toolmarks on many of the other screws make it look like this unit has been worked on already.
Return springs are not correctly installed.
All in all this one looks like a return that someone already beat up and couldn't get to work. I sent a message to the seller asking how she wants to resolve this. will update when I hear back.

That sucks Larry. Other discussions seem to indicate that the return process isn't that bad & the seller has pretty decent ratings. They should work it out for you.

Re: Buying the Chinese ADF on evilbay - A coupla questions
i had issues with the first one i received (broken fuel intake barb). via a few back-and-forth emails with the seller, they sent me another one, which had a different broken barb (they don't package these things too well fro global travel). that said, their first reply was for me to bring it to someplace locally to have it fixed, which they would pay for. probably would have cost them more for that than sending a new one. i just told them it wasn't possible and they promptly sent me the second one.

Did any of yours smell of gas? Seller claims that's from testing.

Mine smelled of fuel slightly. Did not appear used at all.

Mine did not smell and showed no signs of use at all. Methinks you got a used one. You wouldn't "test" with gasoline anyway...well maybe the Chinese would.scrapironchef wrote:Did any of yours smell of gas? Seller claims that's from testing.

I double checked mine, no gas smell. I could only smell the oil I used to lube the parts. I was mistaken.

Re: Buying the Chinese ADF on evilbay - A coupla questions
I offered $115 so with shipping it was $150. Estimated delivery was 3 to 4 weeks from date of purchase but luckily I got mine in exactly 7 days to Phoenix. While kind of lucky I guess since I still haven't tracked down an 1800 single plane manifold and the 4-2-1 exhaust came in the same day.
Like a kid in a candy store I couldn't resist just trying it out with the stock dual plane manifold and 4-1 exhaust.
On the stock 1979 with all of the emissions it seams about the same as I expected it would but does seam to be a bit smoother. You can definitely hear the secondaries open up much better. It does stumble a bit more when I come to a stop sign after going about 30 mph but I haven't tried to tune it much or anything like that.
It was packed up great and no damage to mine. Didn't notice any gas smell and did pull the top off and checked and all the jets and such were tight. Secondary appeared to close all the way but I forgot to check if the secondary stop screw was tight.
I plugged off all of the other thermovalves and such for the old power valve, gulp valve, and EGR for now.
Now if I can just find an 1800 manifold!!
