Leather straps for luggage rack

Post by aevansgatech »

I'm looking for a recommendation on leather straps for the luggage rack. I've seen some sets online for around $100 which seems pricey.

Does anyone use regular leather belts? Or have a better option? Bunjee cords won't cut it cosmetically :P

I've also been looking for a good solution for this, so I am interested to see how others have done it nicely.

I was thinking of trying a belt like this and see how it looks:

A harness leather or tack shop would be able to supply something more appropriate for heavy duty use in potentially harsh conditions.

We've used elastic shock cords to hold things like a picnic basket or medium-sized luggage to the rack. Obviously not decorative so we put them in the trunk when they are not in use. Work well though, and inexpensive.

I made my own from 2 belts purchased at Wal-Mart. I cut the belt in the area that would be under the rack, used a section of bungee to make a loop under the rack. This way the belt can be stretched around the suitcase and luggage rack reducing movement of the suitcase on luggage rack. I also put foam pipe insulation over luggage rack rails to keep suitcase from scratching the chrome.
Sorry I don't have photo

IMHO not really expensive given the amount of leather and craftsmanship involved
