Exhaust routing CS1... pictures ?

Post by cingarbage »

Hi everyone !

Does anyone have pictures of the different exhaust "routings" for CS1 (1800 CC) cars ?
I take it there should be 3 : the Euro version, the US-49 states and the California versions. Right ?

My Spider is a California early 77 version with aftermarket 4-2 header and catalyser replaced by straight pipe (no problem with emissions here). I need to replace the rattling central resonator and a friend of mine has spare new central and rear systems. The rear muffler seems fine but the central one is shaped to go through the center of the car and not under the passenger seat.

I would like to understand whether it is possible to install those parts (and weld to the downpipe) or whether I would be better off buyiing the specific Calif central part. Were there hangers / protections / specific rouutings on the Euro and 49-state cars to cope with the different exhaust design ?

Any further advice ?
Thank you so much for all your expertise !

You can study the microfilms:

I don't think you'll find anything "california specific" in the exhaust. There were two hangers on the muffler, one per side, two springs on the catalytic converter, one per side, and a body-to-exhaust mount near the bend in the downpipe. There were no other mount points. The exhaust ran under the passenger side to the axle, then bent up and towards the center slightly, to align with the tailpipe cut-out in the vehicle rear.

Brad,

Thank you very much for all the docs you share. So helpful !! I had actually checked them and hence realised (pages 73 to 78) that exhaust parts were different between CAT-California and non catalytic MY 76-78 especially as far as the center part goes. The non cat seems to bend down and then straight along the axle while the CAT version runs under the passenger side. I was wondering whether there is also a difference in the mounts / body and holders or whether I could use the Euro center part (whch I can have for free) and just connect it to the down pipe (similar to non cat oe Euro).

Not sure whether I am clear eough. :D I will also try and post pix of my current exhaust setup

Thanks

I guess I'm confused by what you're asking. Once the cars had catalytic converters they all had them, California or not. Prior to the converter they had a resonator under the passenger seat. The exhaust routing was the same regardless of California (031) or 49 State (040) designation.

Thanks Brad ! My apologies... I am pretty new to the spider world ! I read a lot and try and educate myself ;)

Now This clarifies it... So the only different routing on 1800 was before 76 then right ? And the central muffler I have (which definitely is not designed to run under the passenger seat) is likely pre 76 too. My question probably is now whether I can use this part and install it ("under the center of the car) on my 77? Does this question make more sense ?
Thanks!!!

The routing is so similar on the cars that you won't find that to be an issue.

The short answer is yes, 76/77 will interchange. Go by body type and engine type...you have a CS1 body and a 1756cc engine, so any 74-78 Spider (CS1 series years) system will fit. The later type will be too long (the Spider 2000, CS2 and CS0 bodies, the exhaust was made to fit the taller engine - it almost fits). Earlier years are too short.

I checked out the microfilm. What a great resource!

A couple of web nits:

1A shows as a broken link
18-B and 19-B are labeled backwards (18 is 19 and vice versa)
A.J.

1974 Fiat 124 Spider
2006 Corvette
1981 Spider 2000 (sold 2013 - never should have sold that car)
