Clutch pedal spring - this CAN'T be right!

Post by stuartrubin »

Below is a photo of my clutch pedal with either a really beat spring, or a complete hack job (or both). It just doesn't look right. Another clue is that the hole into which the spring is attached on the pedal seems "fresh" (bright silver metal exposed), so I'm thinking this is not an original design.

I'm not actually having problems, other than that the spring is a little "creaky", but I'd like to know how this is supposed to work...

Comments? Thank you.

that is not original. The return spring goes on the transmission clutch fork. There is an over-center spring on the pedal that connects to the underside of the pedal box and has an S hook that attaches around the pedal pivot

You need this hook:

And a clutch pedal return spring (which I didn't find on a short review of the vendors websites--someone will likely be able to supply you with a used one).

The spring is stiff and is a real bear to install. Several good ideas for installing this spring on this forum if you search for "clutch pedal spring". The best suggestion (at least it worked well for me) is to put washers between the coils of the spring to stretch it out before installing it.

Good luck!

Plus the hook Jerry mentioned.

Yep! That's the one! I guess I missed that one on Bayless' site.

It's a bear! I highly recommend that you stuff it full of washers or quarters befor you attempt to install it.
