not leaking rear main seal replace or not?
Getting new transmission and clutch installed in my car and am wondering if I should replace rear main seal (preventive medicine), or leave it alone (if it's not broke don't fix it). I don't see a lot of leaking rear main seal discussions on this site but a lot of preventive med (replacement because I'm there) posts. How many miles before these start to leak? I have 115,000 on the odometer but only 7000 of those are mine. No idea if it was replaced before. Opinions requested. Thanks.

Definitely replace it. Sure would suck if it started leaking 6 months from now...

3rd...replace it and the gasket behind the carrier. worth the 30 seconds it takes to do it all.

+4 By the time you see evidence of a leak, the spring has worn thru the seal and has grooved the journal. There is no cure for this; a new seal will fail quickly as the spring will be riding in the groove.

Re: not leaking rear main seal replace or not?
So I asked the shop to replace the rear main while they were replacing the transmission. Somehow it got lost in translation and they did not replace it because it was not leaking. I'm not happy about this but maybe "if it's not broke don't fix it" will work out.
