New timing belt tensioner bearing seems "tight" is that normal?

Post by JohnMc »

I just bought a timing belt tensioner bearing for 1970 Spider from a reputable source - was $40. Does not spin freely - unlike the one that I replaced (just slight noise from old one). It will turn but will not at all free turn or spin. Is this a problem or normal or did I get one of a bad batch?
Thanks for any assistance.

I just bought a new bearing as well. A new bearing won't free-spin due to the heavy grease and slight tighter tolerances. A bearing that is too tight will feel like it is binding and releasing as you turn the races. You'll feel noticeable differences in the torque required to turn the bearing though a full revolution like it has a catch. What you want is smooth operation without noticeable play. But even with heavy grease you shouldn't have any trouble turning it by hand.
