Ignition timing without timing marks

Post by squealingtires »

The '74 Fiat 124 Spider I'm working does not have a timing belt cover. As I understand it, the timing belt cover has the ignition marks. Does anyone have any suggestions that would help me time the engine?

The easiest thing would be to find a timing cover and put it back on, it does also offer protection from the belt

The other way is to find TDC and then on the reference 10deg on the crank pulley to a fixed point in the engine block, that is a bit challenging without a pointer of some sort

IFyour timing belt is correctly installed, you can use the timing marks on the back side of your cam wheels, which align at TDC. From there, you can estimate about a quarter of an inch of rotation equals 10°.

But yeah, get a cover.

Thanks for the tips. I was able to find a used timing belt cover on eBay and it should be in next week.

Sorry to wake a zombie thread..

But ditto here..

So the casting and slit on the crank is NOT TDC but TDC +10 ?

When setting the crank to the timing gears would I be setting at TDC then or TDC +10.. because that maybe why I keep getting a tooth off.
