Removable luggage rack?
Spouse was wondering if there was one available. I really don't want to drill holes/keep a spare trunk lid. SURCO seems to have some nice ones, but don't list Fiats at all. Anyone have leads?
I'm also considering using some Qclips and the smaller rack basket from Yakima.
Ideas welcome.
Thanks
Neil

Re: Removable luggage rack?
You could build an electromagnet mount to attach the rack to the trunk lid. The sky is the limit in terms of how strong you could make your magnets, and with the flip of a switch the rack would be free to come off..... or fly off and go bouncing down the highway.
If it didn't need to stay on the car for long periods of time it could be battery powered and charged by the alternator.

Electromagnets...now that's tempting....
Think I'll stick with a clamping based solution, though. Gotta be something out there....
But, still....electromagnets.......hmmmmm....

Yes, Andy from Houston (Toplessexpat) has a removable one. I'm sure he'll chime in soon

Re: Removable luggage rack?
I'm excited to hear some ideas / solutions for this because I think I'm going to build one too.
clamps are probably the best way to go. Magnets would have me checking my rack in the mirror at every turn.

Re: Removable luggage rack?
I have a set of 4 strong suction cups with straps, and a vintage suitcase, all snugged down on mine... And a strap to inside, incase of loss of suction!!
Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas, and oil, we have decided to turn off the light at the end of the tunnel. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Used 4 Magnets from KJ magnetics. They each have a pulling force of 146 lbs. That's the reason for the blue pads so as not to damage the finish

Re: Removable luggage rack?
Welder, how do you get yours off the car? Do you just pull it off or is there a way to quickly release the magnets?
Re: Removable luggage rack?
I might be curious how you get the rack off but more important, what an amazing paint job!!! Great color too!!
Re: Removable luggage rack?
Because the trunk or boot has a slight curve , I tilt it up from the rear to the front till the magnets start to release . It takes a little force but the pads protect the paint. Magnets weren't cheap, but I didn't want to drill into the trunk.

Re: Removable luggage rack?
Do you ever use the rack to transport small items, such as a carry-on sized suitcase?
I'm wondering if the magnets are strong enough to hold an overnight bag on a road trip.

Re: Removable luggage rack?
I transported a picnic basket on the back. Did about 140 miles Round trip at 60mph with no movement. If your concerned you could put 4 more magnets underneath doubling the holding force but then the magnets would end up costing as much as the rack. You could also run a temp rope or lanyard from the rack to something in the trunk to give you peace of mind, but believe me these are not your everyday magnets. I can pull the car out of the garage by the rack.(Did that for a test).

Re: Removable luggage rack?
Yep ... I've got a removable one (thanks Csaba).
It's by Custom Carriers (I think, from memory).... but... newsflash.... will not be being installed on the newly repainted trunks of our spiders... and is likely up for grabs...
Looks great with a wicker picnic basket.... or a leather suitcase.

Re: Removable luggage rack?
This is the one I'm getting: removable rack, right size, wooden inserts, aluminum frame (so no rust), and reasonable price.
