Gas tank

I bought a replacement tank for my 82 and when I was going to install it the two ports that come off the back of the tank seem to stick off too far and it doesn't seem possible to fit the hoses to them because they are pressed almost tight to the back edge of the trunk.

My question is, I haven't put any fuel in the tank yet, and was wondering if you think I can cut some of the ports off to allow room to run the lines.
