Today I bought a 1982 Spider- It was garage kept for 10 years and occasionally started. What should I do first? Should I change the oil? Change plugs and wires? Drain gas?-It drives fine once it is jumped off-See electrical new topic. I would love to have help on a priority list of things to start doing.
What plugs and wires are reccomended?
Thanks

Anyone have advice on a certain oil or filter to use? What weight and what brand-synthetic or not? does it matter?

+ on swapping out the fluids....fuel(& filter), brake fluid, coolant, oil & filter.
That done, does the car stop? good idea knowing before going anywhere....brake seals good, rotors in good shape? Consider replacing the brake flexible lines, the old ones could have deteriated insides and a chunk of material could get into the caliper.
Ok, now you can stop, swap plugs out, check under the dist cap and the two wires from the pick up. They get brittle with age and when they break or ground the car stops... How's the vacuum advance? Disconnect its hose from the intake plenum and suck to see if the arm moves. If not, likely it is pooched and a replacement is a good thing.
Once running and the valves clearances are in spec, consider swapping out the O2 sensor on the exhaust pipe. If it is not working, I believe it defaults to an "average" setting and the car still works fine but just might be an issue if you have to pass a smog test....
Keep an eye on the metal fuel and brake lines. If water has got inside the lines as the car has been sitting, the metal could be thin/weak and a pin-hole could develop.
Now, after lunch.....take it for a drive and enjoy.....

Re: Just bought 1982-What should I do first
Thanks so much-Car does drive it was started each week over last couple years so I tool it around the block a couple times-thanks for the advice-Fluids seem simple enough-Is there a how to on bleeding the break lines?
Is it just the one belt around the alternator that I need to replace? Where can I get those-Is it difficult to replace/Which one is the tensioner pulley? Any other belts to worry about?
Also should I get a hanes manual or just look on line for things

The subject of fluids is well discussed on this forum, just do a search. If the previous fluids were non-synthetic, then stay that way. The major belt to replace is the timing belt. Install is well covered here as well, including the tensioner pulley. I use Auto Ricambi for my parts. Also Mark Allison. They both participate in this site. Look them up on line. Go to mirafiori.com. They have a very good reference section on all types of repairs. I good repair manual is a must.
For brake fluid, I use a turkey baster to suck the old fluid out of the tank and replace with new fluid. bleed from farthest away until the fluid turns clear. If you jack the rear of the car, you must lift the axle as well to get it to bleed. Also lots of discussion on speed bleeders and such on this forum as well.

Use a Bosch or Mann filter. Use a non-synthetic 15W40 (e.g. Shell Rotella T). Synthetic is a waste of money, the interval of change on these old motors is too high and synthetic loves to leak. Replace the timing belt and tensioner. Replace the coolant. Then tune it and figure the rest out.spiderman1 wrote:Anyone have advice on a certain oil or filter to use?
