Hi,
No doubt this has been discussed before, but finding things sometimes are difficult. Today, I changed over the timing belt and tensioner pulley on my 1756cc Spider. Thank goodness, I did so, as the tensioner pulley had seized and even had lost some ball bearings. Now all is well, the engine started first pop and the new tensioner pulley is smooth and quiet.
However, the belt sits very forward on the inlet pulley. The pulleys have the shoulder as follows:
Auxiliary pulley: shoulder at front
Inlet pulley: shoulder at rear
Exhaust pulley: shoulder at front.
I know that is an approved combination and the belt is unlikely to fall off, all of the belt sits on the pulley, but it still looks ordinary. Can I and is there anything to be gained in slipping a spacer between the camshaft and the inlet pulley, thereby pushing it forward so that the belt rides further back on the teeth?
Next stop is the replacement of the Marelli dizzy with a 123 Ignition electronic one.

Is all of the belt sitting on the pulleys, or is it overhanging?

The belt is all on the pulley, nothing overhanging, just would look nicer being more in the middle.

The belts wander around a little bit when running. Most wheels have a bright area where the belt has spent most of its time. If it is on the wheel then don't worry about it.jandarah wrote:Hi Mick,

Yes, it is apparent that the belt has spent all of its time on that part of the pulley. I will now cover the pulleys with the yellow guard and forget about it.
