Removing '79 Intake Manifold

Post by mattyd7 »

Finally took the chance to swap out my '79 intake manifold to the single plane and install the DFEV. Hit a roadblock and looking for some help!

I got all the bolts off the manifold (all seven). I also removed all the emissions stuff mounted to it so I would have the most clearance around it. Looks like I will clear the booster, starter, master cylinder, etc. once I can get it moving...

My problem is I cannot get the left most end of the manifold out! I'm talking about how the "tab" on the end of the manifold is behind that black sheetmetal cover. See circled here:

The way it is in that pic is as far as I can get it to move before it jams up. Which isn't a lot, maybe 1/4" from the block at the extreme left there where it jams. I probably messed with it for an hour after getting all the bolts out and gave up for the night in frustration. I've read a ton of people got this out without removing the cover, so how do I do it!?!?

I don't want to cut that metal, since it doesn't seem necessary. I just must be missing something! I tried bending it but it didn't seem like it wanted to. Is that what I need to do? Should I just strongarm it and bend the black panel to the left until it clears?
