The issue with my car was a bad ignition module. I finally took it to my mechanic to get a pro diagnosis. I had misdiagnosed the problem. He noticed the tach bobbing --which it had only begun doing very recently and I hadn't associated it with the stuttering on acceleration. The airflow meter had nothing to do with it although apparently very similar symptoms. The vendor I bought the AFM from graciously accepted a return on the AFM (with a 20% restocking fee--which I thought was fair). I still don't know why it would run with the old one but not the new one.

Thanks again for everyone's input on this.

Weirdness indeed. Had you said the tach was bouncing I think we could have saved you some moola - that is a pretty common problem with known solutions. Why it would work with one AFM and not the other ... I still think your new AFM was bad.

The module has apparently been failing over the course of several years although it got worse recently. Only in the past few weeks did the tach start bouncing. I just didn't associate it. Somehow I've missed hearing of this symptom/diagnosis. So now I know :) and won't forget :)

Cars is hard. Diagnosing problems can drive you crazy sometimes.

Few will admit the fine mistakes...pulling an engine because it wouldn't start under any condition (it had no fuel but the sender was grounded and read full)...after about 20 years of doing this stuff you'll realize you know nothing.
