The solid walnut inserts were in a box that came with the car. They originally had a very light mat finish and looked cheap. I put about 10 coats of gloss spar urethane spray on them, sanding between finishes, and final sanded with 2000 wet or dry sandpaper then buffed it to a high gloss finish. I was extremely happy with the results!

From what I recall the tan interior vinyl, consoles, and carpet were all slightly different tones even when new. The sun worked its magic on the consoles first, the seats tended to to darker, and the door panels usually rotted from the inside out (because people removed the plastic liner on the doors).

So if you want to win a concourse d'elegance you may want to spray everything different tones, then argue with the judges about originality.

When I bought my 81 Spider new from the dealership, it had multiple tan tones. The leather trim on the dash, leather seats, leather covered console and leather covered arm rests were the same color. The door panels, back panels and boot cover were different. It probably was about 3 shades of tan all in all.
