Re: Valves.... ugh
You are measuring with the engine cold, yes? If so you likely have open valves when hot...yeah I'd talk to the mechanic about how to use a feeler gauge.
I guess mechanics don't have to use feeler gauges any more.

Re: Valves.... ugh
Maybe I'm too tired, but the gap is getting smaller with a cold motor? Makes no sense. The gaps should get smaller when the engine heats...anyway, if those are your cold readings then they are more or less in spec except for #3.

I picked up some new gauges as the old ones were pretty ratty and corroded. Took a little more time make sure lobes were perpendicular to the buckets...

Re: Valves.... ugh
Hey Brad....
So I've become pretty good at getting the shims out... so far most all of them have been in thru 4.10-4.25 range... and I need to go bigger to shorten the gaps. Those seem relatively thick already. I'm wondering if my head guy shaved too much on the rebuild? As I understand it, if the valves recess a bit with age and mileage, my gaps should decrease???
If you shave thru cam towers or use a thinner gasket..... you'd have a reduced overall set of gaps?
Or do I just build up this practically new 32702281 FI bare head I have????

Are you using a stock camshaft?
Shims are okay to about 500, then you need to think about whats wrong.

Re: Valves.... ugh
shaving the cam boxes is not a good idea, if you do plan to install adjustable cam gears

Re: Valves.... ugh
AFAIK they're stock cams. I've got a couple of heads I've collected, most of the shims from those are in the 3.9 - 4.02 range. Good to know on the max shim range. Just realized today i need a better accuracy micrometer. My digital one only goes to 100ths... e.g. 4.99....
