I had to replace the ignition module in my distributor couple days ago and noticed that the weights and bushings in the centrifugal advance were all wore out. I took the liberty to rebuild it and recurve it so that maximum advance doesn't exceed 28° total advance.. Made all the difference in the world. Now I have my initial advance to 12° btdc ... Runs way smoother with the big cam I'm running!
Cheers!

Re: Recurving the distributor for max power..
The distributors for the FI SPiders had 22 degrees of mechanical advance. I like those, as they run very well with 12-14 degrees of initial advance.
The distributors for the carbed 2 liter engines had a lot more advance - I think 29 degrees?

Re: Recurving the distributor for max power..
Of course this is with an engine that frequently runs in 3000 and above range.. My engine is the Chevy Vortec 4.3L V6 which rarely saw those high rpms.. Total advance was about 34° or more until I recurved it with a kit from moroso. My engine runs most the time at 2000-3000 rpms. Maximum torque is at 4500 rpms max hp is at 5500 rpms..vandor wrote:The distributors for the FI SPiders had 22 degrees of mechanical advance. Here is some specs that came with the kit I bought..
Note:
Have to add the static timing to these figures not to mention I'm using the light springs and the figure they show for 500rpms isn't correct.. I think it is more like 10° instead of 0°...
