Proper emblems for a '79?

Post by aevansgatech »

I have a 1979 and I'm wondering what the correct 'factory' emblem setup is. It's hard to decipher by scouring the millions of internet photos.

I currently don't have any on the hood or trunk. Would a US '79 have come with gold or silver emblems?

I also don't have Pininfarina side badges. I'm assuming it would've from the factory?

Finally, I received a replacement front grill with the round emblem IN the grill. Did any Spiders come like that from the factory? If so which years? I may put that front grill on and leave the hood badgeless.

Thanks!

70 and perhaps 71 had the expanded metal grill with the badge in the middle. The emblem sat in a large aluminum base.

1979 and 1980 CS2 Spiders have:

Two aluminum wreath emblems with red inserts, front and back. These, if original, are faded to nothing as the center was just a cheap painted thing.

Two pininfarina emblems, one piece, set in a black plastic gasket. These lacked the detail of the early emblems but had a shiny coating.

A 2000 emblem for the trunk lock. It did not say "Fuel Injection".

A pininfarina Spider 2000 emblem on the glove box

A FIAT wreath in the steering wheel

If fitted with alloys (rare on 79s) each wheel had a black cap with "FIAT" behind a clear face, which was always faded.

If fitted with steel rims (common) each wheel had a large plastic hubcap with FIAT in the center.

The grilles were simple, horizontal bars with no emblem.

I ended up ordering the pininfarina bolt-on side badges with the rubber backing gaskets but after poking my head around I can't figure out how to access the backside of the panel? I don't see a way to reach around there through the wheel well or underside of the body at all

I didn't notice the prior link was to the press on badges, so am I stuck with the bolt-ons?

take off the side panels next to the back seat to access the back side of the panel or use two sided tape to hold the badges on

You should not need to. Even the 'bolt-on' emblems will press into the plastic bushings, just like the press-on emblems.

The emblem was on the grille from 1970 to mid-1974.

Is there a good source for the plastic bushings?

bolting them on will prevent other owners from stealing them

I know and that is potentially what happened to mine however in order to get the trim panels off I have to remove the roll bar since it is bolted on through them. I should probably just bite the bullet and get it done modifying the panel so I do not need to pull the roll bar when replacing the top and such.

Bolting them on means someone is going to damage the paint if they try to steal them. I'd rather they steal the emblem than damage the paint. But in the last 25 years I have not heard of anyone getting their emblems stolen.

I hadn't considered theft as a problem

My problem is the PO filled in all the emblem holes prior to repaint so no matter what I need to drill new holes and may not hit exactly the original spot. I will try accessing the back through the rear seat panel area and report back

What size hole is required to fit those on a 1978? Mine appear to be sized for a #8 or #10 bolt and will need to be drilled out.

I thought I once overheard 2 guys walking past my car saying that they had decided not to steal it because they would have to fix it again tomorrow. I think your badges are safe.
