1982 to 1979 engine swap questions

Post by BammBamm »

My 1982 has bent valves and i dont trust the guy who rebuilt it. The rest of his work is shotty. So I picked up a running 1979 carborated engine. I noticed a couple of thing are differnt. For one the 79 motor valve covers say Lancia on them. What should I be looking for when I do this swap? New to Spiders

The 79 should drop right into the 82 body with everything lining up if it is the original 79 engine.

I checked the block # and it is a 1980 second generation 2.0 but was in a 79.. There was something different and the sensor on top of the engine. i will take a pic later.

If the cam boxes are from a Lancia then they won't hold oil correctly with the motor flat on a Spider (Lancias had a tilt, so the boxes are tilted internally to hold the oil level). But you have to compare them with what you have...because who the heck knows if they are just covers, boxes, whatever. It is easy to fix, particularly when the motors are out, put your FIAT boxes on the Lancia head. You'll have to re-do the timing belt and set the valve lash again, but you'd probably planned to do at least the belt anyway.

Also the Lancia might not have the distributor on the exhaust cam and your FIAT will.

Otherwise, I don't know, check everything out when the motor is out. It is a great time to change the rear seal as you're likely to not see it again (or want to), and change the clutch. Anything wearable that is easy to get to - the tensioner, clutch, rear seal, camshaft seals, aux pump seal, motor mounts.

if it is indeed a Lancia motor the oil pan and pickup will be different too. I have a customer looking for a 2L Lancia pan and oil pump if it's available

The donor engine is a fiat block and fiat head of the correct year for the car it came out of. It appears that its just a lancia valve cover. in fact its only one valve cover.. The story of this car will hopefully make a good car for me in the end. The base car was being restored by a guy in CA.. he spent alot of $ on this car and then bent the valves after rebuilding it. It sat and then I got it for $600. Then another car was also being restored. The engine rebuilt and tons of spare parts were collected. The project ended up with a hotrodder. He replaced all the seal and belts and then got the motor running. Then decided to put a chevy 350 in it. So out comes the motor, tranny, most of the interior, plus all the spare parts inlcuding new in box top and seats for $500. I got almost all the parts I need. Maybe next weekend I will drop the donor motor in with the 82 intake and exhaust..how do i post a pic?

I need help.I wanted to drop a 79 carborated head in my 82 FI car. I thought it was going to be an easy swap but it not looking ggod. There is a serious difference between the exhuast side of the two heads. I want to limit the money i need to spend to get this car running. My options are to change the exhaust or repair/replace the head. It is my intention to repair the original motor. the previous owner had set the valve 180 out and bent some valves. I need some help here...
Image

Maybe just buy this head and try to fix the original
