'chrome' instrument trim

Post by ga.spyder »

I saw many cars at FFO with chrome bezels around the instruments. Some were replacement bezels and some were stick on that covers the black bezels.Honestly ,I couldnt tell the difference.Has anyone installed the 'stick-ons'? Did they go on easily w/o removing the instrument panel and the guages themselves.I like the look of the trimmed instruments,

Craig,

Do you have black bezels now? Do you enjoy driving with the sun low in the horizon behind you? Keep on enjoying those two in combination with each other.

Love the wife, love the car. love the thoughts of endearment she (wife) bestows on me. $50 something for plastic chrome glue on bezels sounds like a lot. they look real nice, if you like the chrome bezel look. Nardi wheels with highly polished metal spokes also look really nice. As Billy Crystal used to say "Vu Wook Maavelous"

point that nose to the east an hour before sunset and you nearly gotta put the top up to keep the glare from blinding you. if it wasn't for the gift factor, the bezels would be long gone, regardless of the cost. i've even heard of guys painting those wheel spokes for the same reason...the glare can get that bad.

now, to actually answer the question you asked. Dry fit them first, as one of the gauges i covered was just a tad wider that the others and i had to dremel grind the i.d. of the bezel. it was not a factory Spider gauge. the factory spider gauges accepted the plastic rings without modification.

a dab of clear silicon adhesive is all that it takes to put them on. and, silicon allows you to pop them off any time you wish. i will bet you lunch that from three foot you cannot tell the difference between these over-rings and true metal bezels (which are also available). the best thing about the installation of the plastic rings is that zero disturbance of the dash or gauge needs to take place. 5 minutes and you can have all five installed.

the gauges pictured here http://webpages.charter.net/mbouse/dash ... vation.pdf all have those plastic rings on them.

Thanks ,Mike I am glad you responded because one of the cars I saw them on was yours!I wanted to ask you about them at FFO ,but the time flew by on Sat.I spoke w a couple other people that had them ,one bezels and one stik ons ,and I couldnt tell the diff.I think they look great ,but never thought of the glare issue. If I do them ,it would definitely be the glue ons so I could easily remove them if I want.I also liked your wind deflector which you could take out easy.John Kristoff gave me a ''roll bar'' that looks great ,but can be taken out in a few seconds! Not much good if you invert the car ,but looks great.I am going to mount a plexi piece like yours on that ''faux bar''. I saw a few pretty ingenious mods at FFO ,but never got to speak to the owners.
Thanks ,Craig

Craig,

not being critical here, but that is my biggest complaint of the past FFO. too big to talk to everyone and see all the cars as well.

anyway, my personal opinion aside... i do not take personal credit for that plexiglas wind deflector; though i do advocate its construction and use, especially for a Spider on a budget. it is Ron Conlon's design... here's a link:

scroll down to the "Do-it-Yourself Wind Screen" and giver a click

my wife and i love ours. we can travel 60 mph and still hold conversations at normal volume. the wind buffeting is decreased substantially.

so, you enjoyed the crackle paint... or had some "do-gooder" dropped my hood by that time? grrr...
