Noise from Pass. Rear, when making turns, differential?

Post by KenAdams »

Hey guys I have noticed the 1971 Spider makes a bit of noise when making turns, sounds like passenger side rear tire. It also feels like it kind of hops on that side slightly. I was wondering if I should start by changing the diff. fluid or does this sound like a symptom of something else? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Make sure your exhaust is not able to contact your driveshaft.
Other than that, it almost sounds like a broken tooth in the differential side or spider gears.

Also, make sure it isn't something easy like the wheel lug nuts not being tight.
I would also check the wheel bearing and/or brake caliper on the offending side, as well.
Certainly you want the proper amount of gear lube in the diff, but topping it off and/or changing it will not magically fix the problem.

Check where the exhaust pipe comes down near the pan hard rod. Mine hits the rod occasionally ( actually more than occasionally) and was driving me nuts as I thought sure I had a bad rear wheel bearing or something worse. Now that I know what it is I will fix it next time I put the car on jack stands to change fluids. I'm sure it will involve bleeding knuckles and swear words in order to shift that section of the exhaust about a 1/2 in to the rear

I vote for wheel bearing. Check if the wheel is a little loose when slightly off the ground.

Sounds like spider gears in the differential to me.. If the noise only occurs in the turns then that's just the gears. If it is a constant noise then rear wheel bearings or brakes.. Providing the exhaust is not rubbing on the differential.

Cheers!
