Clutch pedal makes noise

Can someone please help out on my problem? Just replaced new clutch pedal with new cable, for old pedal bent and cable snapped. There is a noise when I press down on the pedal which sounds like the spring and also when I press down on the pedal by hand , notice the piviot bolt moves with pedal when depressed. Tightened the nut to the piviot bolt nice and snug but the pedal does not return had to loosen the nut a little.

It has been a while since I swapped out a brake pedal but if I remember correctly, there is a plastic "bushing" between the rod and pedal. Mine was broken and kind of crunched. Perhaps you have something similar?

The bushing is still good.

Lube the pivot points and also lube the "V" where the cable is attached.

Success , no more noise. Clutch pedal moves nice and smooth.

Usually to disable the starter unless you have the clutch pedal pressed all the way down. Many will be bypassed over time.

I'm pretty sure Fiat's didn't have the disable starter feature. I think the switch is for the fast idle circuit to help control emissions. I don't have a 77 wiring diagram, but the 78 wiring diagram calls out a fast idle clutch switch that is connected to the electrovalve.

I was under the impression that DOT mandated them around 75 or was that when they started with the seat belt interlock. Both generated a lot of talk on how to disable them. Can't go by mine as it is far from stock with the way the diesel was shoehorned in. Yes the wiring diagram on the 77/78 has a fast idle switch listed. I would say easily that 80% of the engine wiring is unused on mine with most of it just hanging loose in the engine compartment. I am still identifying open bare terminators carrying power tucked into various hiding places rather than safely being capped off.

It is a fast idle switch; FIATs didn't have a starter engagement switch. Thank god...we'd have a whole forum on melted switches and burnt ignition leads.

On cars with the fast idle circuit when the clutch is disengaged and the transmission is in 3 or 4 the fast idle solenoid will open and the idle will increase until engine speed drops. It is to alleviate the rich condition that occurs when you snap the throttle shut and engage the clutch during decels.

Not used by the Diesel IP which simply has a fuel cutoff, cold start device hooked to a temp sensor and a tach connection. I am liking the economy and simplicity along with the long haul reliability more and more. Last stick I bought without the starter interlock switch was a 62 Falcon with the small straight 6 which they never should have produced. It was like they skipped installing every other main bearing and what they did put in was undersized.

The interlock does prevent a number of accidental launches into people, parked cars and garage doors until it gets bypassed. Have mixed feeling on it not being part of the original design or mandated as there are too many folks out there that are not safe to be around when starting a car without one. I was thinking about wiring the switch into the starter circuit for a tad more safety when my wife takes the Spider since hers is interlocked and she tends to forget when she gets into one without it since she is in the habit of turning the key to start before she presses the clutch pedal down. I know, bad habit that I have not been able to break her of.
