Carburettor Confusion

Post by mm1000 »

I am in the process of returning a 1974 Spider to running order. It has been garaged for many years so is in quote good order.

So far I have put in new oil, filter plugs etc and got the engine turning over with a good spark. The fuel pump made all the right noises but didn't pump any fuel. So I replaced this with an aftermarket one and now have fuel running up to the carburettor, having replaced some perished hoses. However if you manually pull the throttle there is no evidence of petrol coming out of a jet. I'm thinking I should at least be able to smell it?

If I spray easystart directly into the carb it nearly fires but obviously it needs the flow of fuel from the carburettor.

I have looked for carb rebuild kits but I don't really know what I'm looking for as the carb I have is made by Solex and I have no idea what it is? From browsing the forum most talk is of Weber carbs.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!

The bottom side facing the engine should have the carb's model number. With that in hand you should be able to find a rebuilt kit. I am not sure if the Euro spec cars came with Solex carbs, possible it could have come with either a Solex or a Weber. The Weber would have likely been a 34DMS.

Don't stuff around with the Solex, track down a Weber. Someone here will have a spare ADFA lying around, and most of them are close to home for you.

Or Ebay.

Thanks for the replies. I should have added it's a US import which has been converted to RHD.

It seems sensible then to try and go down the Weber route - I will try and get hold of one. It just seems a shame in that the Solex carb does look in good condition. Would it be a diaphragm or something that has gone in it or a blockage?

Does it look like this one?

If it looks the same, here's a kit.

The photo has an accelerator pump diaphragm shown at bottom left. That's most likely your problem if you've got fuel up to your float bowl, but as you say, it could be a blockage also.

That's the one! I'll try and source a kit in the UK - or at least a diaphragm!
