Engine dies at stop
'77 with stock ADFA has run pretty well and everything works in the short time I have owned but now stalls out when coming to a stop unless I'm able to tap the gas and feather it a bit. Idles ok otherwise. I'm curious about the barrel shaped thingie with a wire going to it and have heard I should hear a click when disconnecting or connecting. I do not. What does this do? How and when would it get it's power to operate?

Re: Engine dies at stop
If its not clicking when you touch/remove the wire to it with the ignition in the Run position, that is almost definitely the issue.
That solenoid effectively disables fuel flow through the idle jet when its not receiving 12v power.
You can try running a jumper from the coil + to that solenoid temporarily and see if it then works to at least narrow down a defective solenoid vs. a wiring issue.

Excellent, thank you. I think it's more likely a wiring issue. I was just now looking at the wiring diagrams and it seems to have a connection to the tachometer. I'd like to know when and how it's supposed to get voltage.
Most of my electrical looks ok except my clock and lighter don't work and possibly this.

This may be a leaking booster. The symptom sounds like it.
To diagnose, disconnect your brake booster hose at the intake manifold. Cap it with a rubber cap or plug. Drive the car - keep in mind it will be somewhat more difficult to stop. If the "dies at stop" problem goes way then you have a leaking brake booster diaphragm.

Re: Engine dies at stop
Tried that - inconclusive. I realized my idle is a bit low anyway - about 500 - and I don't hear any hiss. Problem seems to be improving on its own...
