Fuel Pump

Post by Chihua33 »

Hello all,
I have an 82 and it's been in and out of storage/maintenance for awhile now. I went to back it out of the shed the other day and when I turned the key on the fuel pump was not coming on. The fuel pump was replaced last year so I don't think it would be the pump itself.

My question to you is, where are any fuses or relays or anything of the sort for the fuel pump?

Pump won't come on unless you are cranking the engine. You might try with the ignition on and then take the air filter off and poke the AFM flap and see if a helper will hear it then or if no helper, with a rag underneath, loosen the fuel line to the blue cold start injector and see if fuel comes out. The pump puts out around 35 psi? so you should see something if the pump is working.

Ever since I bought the car it has turned on with the key, no need to crank the engine for the pump to run.
It's always been as soon as you turn the key, you hear the pump and then you crank and she would fire!

I've had 2 instances where a new FI fuel pump sat for a year and wouldn't run.

Weird, On the FI cars from the factory I believe when one cranks the car, the air flap opens a bit/enough for a contact in the AFM box to be completed then send a signal eventually to the fuel pump. If one just has the key in the ignition position and the pump comes on, I suspect a previous owner has mucked with it a bit. The stock system is safer, if in an accident and the engine stops, Fuel stops pumping.....
In your case, direct contact a 12V supply to the pump contacts and see what happens.

The only reason the pump would come on without cranking the engine is if someone messed with the AFM or dual relay. So you have to figure out:

If power is getting to the fuel pump when the key is on (use a voltmeter on the pump leads) or cranking. Right now just figure out when it gets power, doesn't matter why. If it gets power when ON or cranking/running then fine, you have power. If you power and no pump running then you have a bad pump. If you don't have power then you have to figure out if the system works as designed (pump runs when engine is drawing air) or they added their own wiring or modified the AFM, then either correct it or fix their repairs.
