So I could do all those things on my list of course.

I find it much easier to pull it all out together, and less time consuming by far. But - I don't have a lift - if I did I might think differently.

Hi Mik,
I am in the exact same situation but lost 2nd gear. I am trying to find someone in North New Jersey who is an expert on these syncros, sliders, forks, etc...Was instructed to have all the gears and bearings looked at along with the clutch while doing this.
I will most likely order these parts from Mark Allison's, then try to provide specific instructions to mechanic in the hopes that the labor isn't too expensive...around $600 is what I've heard. To replace a couple gears and with labor I think we are looking at $800-1,000. Other option would be to purchase a trans from Auto Ricambi but then I am not sure what labor would be to have installed.
Keep me posted on how you decide to proceed.

Best, Matt

condolences on your second gear. :(

ok. strange thing...i have still been using the car just for little hops in town, and last night the situation changed entirely, but not for the better. or the worse, for that matter. there was a little grind as i geared down from way-too-slow in fourth down to second, and it would not go in. this happened as i was slowing down to enter a parking lot. i coasted a bit and was then going slow enough to grab first with no problem. in the parking lot, i found that second was a total no-go. absolutely wouldn't slip in. but now, third gear works, even with its dilapidated synchro. so, i still have a four-speed, but now i have to pass second instead of third. which, i guess, makes it pretty worthless.

for the time being, i am getting that tranny from texsardo. no guarantees, of course, as to its functionality, but for the price it is worth the risk. and if i can buy enough time to then rebuild mine, life will be good. if it all works as i hope it will, i will then happily send the uh...at this point...rather promiscuous...transmission off to you for the same meager price.

Check out our website http://www.njfiats.org

There are a list of East Coast vendors.

AW Imports in Eatontown does work on 124's but I can't comment on thier expertise with the trans.

Fun Imports in Conn is a go to guy with any issue. Danny is worth the trip.

Where are you located? We have a monthly breakfast gathering in Bordentown, you should stop by.

Yes, Danny is a great guy, but AW is not a service shop.

Actually AW does some service, one of our friends had their control arms replaced there.

Matt, Colgen motors in Newark is supposed to be knowledgeable.

Thanks Gents!

I definitely look forward to these breakfast runs soon. My wife and I live in Montclair, NJ and we've got a couple college soccer players so usually are on the run to see games on weekends but we hope to get to an event soon. I have heard of Col Gen but have decided to go with Total Precision in Belleville, NJ just outside of Newark...

Regards, Matt
